Women and girls constitute half of the world’s population but according to the UN only less than 30 percent are involved in research particularly in the field of science. Gender bias and stereotypes have to continue to steer women and girls from participating in science as many consider it to be a man’s field.
The Covid_19 pandemics has clearly shown the critical role of women researchers in different stages of the fight from advancing knowledge on the virus to developing techniques for testing and finally creating the vaccine against the virus.
The pandemic has also affected many early-career women in science, thereby widening the gender gap in science. It is against this backdrop that the United Nations has centered this year’s celebration on the theme: “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID_19.”
Equality is needed empower women and girls while also contributing positively to the world they live in. At African Changemakers Women Network, we celebrate women and girls in science and use our platform to advance the cause for equality in science by organizing an online event that will gather women in science who will discuss how challenges they face which will enable policymakers to push for a change to close the gap.
